Fuck Me Father, For I Have Sinned

What really gets me about this story is that as the Catholic Church, around the world, realised that priests were raping (mainly) young boys there was a mad scramble back in 1986 for them to insure themselves against any future legal action. Wouldn't want to lose money over it.

They didn't put any child protection in place, no, they simply moved the paedophiles to a new parish where there was plenty of new, unsuspecting young children to bugger.

I think, even if it's just for show, that all people in the church who knew about it should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting or collusion or whatever charge can be shoe-horned in.

I also think they should go after the overall Catholic Church (The Vatican) for turning a blind eye. The Vatican didn't even respond to repeated requests for information from this inquiry.

So if diocese around the world suddenly started insuring against legal action, as they knew their priests were raping young children, couldn't the insurance companies tell them to fuck off? They had knowledge that what they were insuring against was happening.

Mick,

You are absolutely right, the fact that the church took out insurance to protect themselves financially is disgusting.

I had a catholic upbringing and never experienced or heard of anything like this, however what has now come out in relation to the church being responsible for covering these atrocities up is deplorable.

Just throwing this into the arena, do you think that the need for priests to be celibate has any impact on the problem?

I do think (as a person brought up with a C of E upbringing) that the Catholic Church as a body are that wrapped up in their image that they've lost touch with the real world.

I think so T'B, it aint normal is it ?

Incredible that the power of the church in Ireland was such that it was a no-go zone for the police.

I think they ought to shove something hard up the Pope's backside and see how he like's it.

Blimey Leb, looks like something from the future.

Is that what priests in Ireland drive?

My Dad was brought up in a strict Irish catholic household, and was taught by that weird bunch of priests: The Jesuit Brothers. He says that child abuse has been going on with that lot since Moses was in short trousers. He had that much contempt for his catholic upbringing, that he decided that I was not to be baptised. Which probably goes to expaining why I'm such a godless son of a bitch n' that.

I went to an all-boys catholic school run by sadistic Jesuit Priests where this kind of thing happened.

Not to me - I was an ugly child - but to others I know/knew, one of whom is now a barrister and is in the middle of a court case seeking recognition of and compensation for what happened to him. He is still suffering, believe me.

In answer to your question: yes, in my experience celibacy has a huge impact.

Paedophiles will always seek a safe haven that allows access to children - the catholic church has and continues to offer that.

Yes I think I've heard your friends case in the news, do you think that because of the celibacy that the priests have no idea of boundaries?

I think celibacy drives them mad because its unnatural. Not sure about the boundaries thing.

The priesthood attracts paedos because of the access to children and the levels of trust it affords (and the closing of ranks it is renowned for.)

Was talking to someone I know about this, he's not a believer that the celibacy has anything to do with it.  He also thinks I have it in for the Catholic Church, which to be fair is pretty much correct, but whether I am critical of the Catholic Church is irrelevant.

He tried to palm it off by saying that it happens in a lot of kids homes, Catholic or not.  I agreed that may be the case but suggested that it happens a lot more in Catholic ones, he wasn't up for that idea.
