Oh and yes they are just pop, no more, no less. |
Re: 'Just pop'. See, there we are again. To me, Beatles are pop, Sex Pistols are pop, Motown is pop, The Smiths are pop, New Order are pop, The Jam are pop, Iggy Pop is, er, pop. To name but a few. Since when has it been bad to produce good pop music. I'll listen to all the chin strokers in the world, and they'll never convince me that just because a song has an eight minute guitar solo in the middle of it, that it's any better than T'Beatles 'Ticket to Ride'. Lennon and Mcartney (George had some moments as well) wrote some fantastic songs.
And as someone in the thread mentioned earlier, The Beatles were in the right place at the right time. But then again so were hundreds of other bands filled with lads who had access to instruments and studios, and not many of them have left anything like the legacy that the Beatles have. As for The Doors, they did some amazing songs, but going on stage pissed as fuck and dying in a bath?????? What a hero! FFS! |

| Whatever one's opinions of the Beatles, at least they can't be accused of being purveyors of free form jazz. |

And as far as we know Lennons penis remained tucked in his britches when performing on stage.
They were not only in the right place at the right time but were that place and time
For about five maybe six years they were as far ahead of the pack as Usain Bolt would be in a RegFest Sprint. I can handle “not moved by it”, The reaction against the hype, Paul Mac is twee etc but not that they don’t write from the heart. I think they are a perfect combo of Heart and Head. Best quote of the thread. There's no wonder they voted this bloke in as the Mayor of Cleckhuddersfax (LD, not Macca)

| Without the extreme good fortune of hooking up with visionary producer George Martin they would have been just another Hermans Hermits. |

Without the extreme good fortune of hooking up with a visionary plastic surgeon I would have been just another Herman Munster.
Back on topic:
Bit of a blanket statemnt that G. Circumstance did smile on them quite a lot, but they had the talent to go with it. Anyway, before George Martin worked with the Beatles he'd done little in the way of recording rock n' roll bands. I've heard both Martin and the members of the band say that they learnt a lot of stuff together. |

Who? George Martin or grunt.
If Herman Munster made a dish from spuds, would it be a Munster mash? And if it proved popular with his dinner guests would it in the final analysis be a graveyard smash? Makes you think doesn't it? No? Just me again eh. |

I'm pretty sure I've neither heard The White Album nor Revolver - which is a bit strange, as I know that I've played the snot out of the blue and red compilation type albums over the years and can even tolerate a few bars of Sgt Pepper.

Very, very good album.
Feels like they just recorded it, without loads of fucking about, and, as a result, it's fresh. _________________ +
