Right, I realise I'm banging on about this lot but I'm working through their back catalogue and keep hitting a rich vein of class.
Despite Butts thinking that Southern Rock Opera is their best offering ( Good but their weakest for me) I received Decoration Day through my letterbox today.
Fundamentally the DBT's at this stage had three different styles ( as they still do ) Patterson Hoods unique style, Jason isbells very different melodic offerings and Mike Cooleys rock/country style. Cooleys songs are absolutely magical, reminiscent of the legendary Townes Van Zandt and he is , in my opinion , a class act.
For me, discovering this band is like finding a diamond in a field full of cow pats, they are that good. How can a band so good have slipped under the radar ?
This album is the best I have heard so far. |

| I love that feeling of finding music i have not heard of before. The wonder that you missed them but the inevitability that you were always going to find them. |

It is very good but they all are, as you say.
I first came across them a few years ago when they were mentioned in the 'dispute' between Lynyrd Skynrd and Neil Young and the 'Southern Man/Sweet Home Alabama' thing.
'Southern Rock Opera' depicts life in the deep south as seen through the eyes and ears of a Skynrd fan and I just found that whole concept fascinating. That's why that album is my favourite (at the moment).
Their first two records (Gangstabilly/Pizza Deliverance) are amazing also.
I think Patterson Hood is the real genius behind them and if you listen to his solo stuff (will bring on Thursday) you might agree. I also have a fantastic bootleg of him careering through songs from 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' in a live performance which I must dig out. Towards the end you hear some commotion in the crowd and Springsteen himself is stage right (without Hood knowing) and they do a couple of songs together.
There is loads of live stuff out there (legally). They put out all their concerts on torrents like some other groups have started doing recently. |

I think this is the article that first alerted me to them.
http://www.thrasherswheat.org/jammin/lynyrd.htm
Ronnie and Neil
And out in California, a rock star from Canada writes a couple of great songs
about the bad shit that went down
"Southern Man" and "Alabama" certainly told some truth
But there were a lot of good folks down here and Neil Young wasn't around
Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends
their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So He wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the lord |

It's a great album (The Big To-Do) up there with their best I'd say.
On top form lyrically
'Which one's the birthday boy, she said/ I ain't got all night'. |
